The season is complex and with the 5 penalty points Perugia is psychologically conditioned and does not believe enough in the great comeback. The Grifoni finish in 15th place, relegating. Best scorer of the season is Salvatore Bagni with just 5 goals. In 81/82, having sold Bagni to Inter and Paolo Rossi to Juventus, President D’Attoma nevertheless intends to bring Perugia back to the top flight immediately by hiring the experienced Gustavo Giagnoni as the team’s coach. The Ambu-Cavagnetto attacking pair did not produce the desired results and the “goal twins” Pagliari-Morbiducci tried to reverse the offensive trend. The top scorer for the biancorosso turns out to be Ezio Cavagnetto with 7 goals. Perugia finishes 6th in the championship with 42 points,failing to achieve the goal of promotion.

In the following season 1982-83, Aldo Agroppi arrived on the Perugia bench. The “biancorossi” did not achieve the expected results, finishing in 11th place with 36 points. Best scorer is Giovanni Pagliari with 10 goals scored. The team’s most representative players are Domenico Caso, Massimo Mauti, Pierluigi Frosio, goalkeeper Nicola Di Leo, Dario Sanguin and Luigi Zerbio.

In the years 83/84 the president became Spartaco Ghini, the architect of the Grifoni’s first historic promotion to Serie A in 1974/75. Giampiero Vitali sits on the bench; the season proves more difficult than expected with an 8th place finish. Best scorer is Moreno Morbiducci with 8 goals. It should be noted that on August 21, 1983, in the first round of the Coppa Italia, Perugia won against Trapattoni and Platini’s Juventus 1-0 with a feat by Massimo Mauti in the 42′ of the first half.

In 84/85 Aldo Agroppi was recalled to the bench with the goal of regaining the top series. Despite 30 consecutive useful results and only one defeat in the Pisa match, the Grifoni finished the championship in 4th place scoring an impressive 48 points just one length behind Bari and two points behind Pisa and Lecce, touching but not achieving promotion. Another record, this time a bitter one: Perugia is the only formation in the cadet tournament to have been defeated only once. The Biancorosso’s top scorer was striker Gibellini with 12 goals, known as “Gibo gol.” Worthy of mention is the epic duel in the Coppa Italia, on August 29, 1984, between Corrado Benedetti and Diego Armando Maradona (at his absolute debut in official matches in Italy) won by the biancorosso footballer with the match in fact ending 0-0.

Notable players include Gibellini, goalkeeper Pazzagli, Secondini, De Stefanis and Zanone.

In1985-1986 Spartaco Ghini called Massimo Giacomini to the bench, replaced during the season due to poor results by the “usual” deputy, L’Avv. Giampiero Molinari.

The imponderable happens, Perugia suffers throughout the championship and in the last match comes the home defeat against Arezzo that determines its bitter relegation to Serie C1. Perugia is, in addition, involved in the second “Totonero” scandal that condemns it to double relegation to Serie C2.

In 1986-1987 they start again from the C2 series, the president is Salvatore Gadaleta. Three coaches took turns during this tribulated season: Massimo Roscini, Pierluigi Frosio and Massimo Colautti. With difficulty Perugia reached ninth place, despite a disastrous start that saw two consecutive home defeats against Vis Pesaro and Ravenna. Both derbies with Ternana end 1-1. The talent of youngster Fabrizio Ravanelli explodes, scoring five goals in 26 matches.

In its second year in Serie C2, with new president Luciano Ghirga and with coach Mario Colautti on the bench, confirmed after the previous season, Perugia overwhelmed the championship with 51 points (tied with Casarano), the result of 20 wins, 11 draws and 3 defeats, as many as 52 goals scored and only 16 conceded. The talent of Fabrizio Ravanelli explodes, ending the season with 23 goals. Thanks to sporting director Piero Aggradi, outstanding athletes wear the Perugia jersey such as Angelo Di Livio, Tiziano Manfrin, the experienced Giovanni Pagliari and Fabrizio Provitali. The match against Gubbio, despite the C2 series, sees at the “Curi” as many as 15,000 paying spectators.

In 1989-1990 , the president was Giancarlo Tinarelli, the successive coaches were Ferruccio Mazzola and Marcello Neri. Perugia, orphaned of Ravanelli, Manfrin and Rambaudi, obtained 9th place despite the excellent season played by the striker Fermanelli who scored 16 goals, top scorer of the group together with the future griffon Giovanni Cornacchini.

In 1990-1991 , Franco D’Attoma returned to the presidency of Perugia. Led by coach Paolo Ammoniaci, Perugia finished the championship in 4th place. Goleador of the team was striker Fermanelli with 12 goals scored. Among the standouts were Massimo Beghetto, Perugia’s Marcello Castellini and Roberto Di Nicola. President Franco D’Attoma passed away on May 7, 1991. At his funeral the coffin is held up by Perugia players along with Ternana players as a sign of respect.

     </details>

THE ERA OF LUCIANO GAUCCI

With the arrival of Luciano Gaucci in 1991, one of the most controversial and fascinating eras in the history of Perugia Calcio opened. Perugia encounters difficulties in recapitalization and through Eng. Scrafani on November 7, 1991 a decisive meeting takes place that in a few hours leads to the change of ownership with the entry of Luciano Gaucci as president of Perugia.

The beginning of the season is quite troubled, sporting director Luigi Piedimonte is struggling to set up the lineup. The bench is entrusted to Paolo Ammoniaci, who after two days is replaced by Giuseppe Padapopulo. With Gaucci’s takeover, a corporate revolution takes place with the arrivals of players Giuseppe Dossena, Claudio Nitti and Antonio Di Carlo, and a third bench change takes place with the arrival of Adriano Buffoni. Perugia finishes the championship in third place with 40 points just one length behind President Matarrese’s Andria and three points behind Ternana. Best biancorosso scorer Pasquale Traini.

In 1992/93 Gaucci strengthened the team to reach the goal of Serie B. In this season two “homemade” boys emerge: Federico Giunti and Marcello Castellini. The team gets good results but misunderstandings arise between the management and the technical area. Luciano Gaucci on the sixteenth day of the first leg calls Walter Alfredo Novellino to the bench. On June 6, 1993, after a long run-up, Perugia faces Acireale in the play-off in the neutral of Foggia accompanied by about 18,000 Perugia fans. Ilario Castagner sits on the bench and the Grifoni win 2-1, but only the next day comes the shock news that will condemn Perugia, newly promoted to Serie B, to relegation to Serie C1 because of a sports offence. Serious riots take place following the decision of the sports justice, which even end up being broadcast worldwide on the Cnn channel. Best scorer of the season Giovanni Cornacchini with 19 goals.

In 1993/94 at the third attempt Gaucci hits the Serie B goal. Due to disqualification, however, the president is replaced by lawyer Alfredo Salerni. Confirmed coach Ilario Castagner dominates the tournament with Perugia finishing in first place with 71 points (in this season for the first time the victory formula is introduced that is worth 3 points). Absolute domination of the Grifoni with best scorer the “usual” Giovanni Cornacchini with 20 goals.

The following season 1994/95 is a season of transition, problems arise between Ilario Castagner and Luciano Gaucci that lead, despite the skepticism of the square, to the exoneration of the coach with the takeover of coach Mauro Viviani. Perugia ended the Serie B championship in seventh place with best scorer again Giovanni Cornacchini with 20 goals.

In the youth field, the “primavera” boys coached by Diego Giannattasio reached the scudetto final, losing to Domenico Caso’s Lazio (first leg 2-1 for the Griffins in Santa Sabina, return 1-0 at the Olimpico in favor of the biancocelesti).

In 1995/96 Walter Alfredo Novellino lands back on the Perugia bench. The experience is short-lived because he is succeeded from October 1 by Diego Giannattasio, who in turn is replaced after a few weeks by Giovanni Galeone. The talent of bomber Marco Negri explodes, scoring an impressive 18 goals during the season. Perugia conquers on the last day the third place that is worth the promotion to Serie A thanks to the victory against the already promoted Hellas Verona 3-2 in front of an overflowing “Curi” stadium. The “Primavera” formation led by captain Riccardo Gaucci, once again in the final, this time won the scudetto on the neutral of Ischia by winning 2-1 against Parma with the affirmation of a young Gennaro Gattuso, author of a goal in the final and protagonist together with Cristiano Lucarelli, Marco Storari and Davide Baiocco.

In 1996/97 Perugia relegated to Serie B on the very last day losing to Piacenza 2-1. A bitter relegation because it occurred because of the avulse classification against Piacenza and Cagliari, which won the last championship match at San Siro against AC Milan. This season also saw more changes on the bench with Giovanni Galeone being replaced by Mauro Amenta, who was in turn succeeded in January 97′ by Nevio Scala. Perugia’s best scorer Marco Negri with 15 goals.

Here comes the second consecutive Scudetto for the “Primavera” biancorossa formation won in the final against Brescia 2-1 after extra time on the Misano Adriatico playing field. Gennaro Gattuso, voted best player of the tournament, was again the protagonist.

Perugia in the 97/98 season after a long chase won promotion to Serie A thanks to a victorious penalty shootout playoff against Torino. Initially the bench was entrusted to Attilio Perotti who after a few weeks was replaced by Alberto Bigon. A few months later Perotti was recalled for a second time, but on March 23 the fourth bench change was made with the arrival of Ilario Castagner. For the first time the season’s bomber is a midfielder, Antonio Bernardini, who scores 11 goals. Memorable remains the Reggio Emilia playoff after a grueling series of penalties with the decisive seal of “Cobra” Sandro Tovalieri. For the occasion Perugia scaramanticamente decides to use the jersey worn by the “Perugia of Miracles.”

In 1998/99 Perugia suffers but manages to achieve salvation in extremis despite the fact that in the last match comes the defeat against Milan that decrees the conquest of the Scudetto by the Rossoneri. However, the draw between Piacenza and Salernitana, allows the biancorossi to keep the top category. This season marks the debut in Italy of Japanese talent Hidetoshi Nakata, who ends the season with 10 goals. Nakata represents the only foreign player in the biancorossa’s history to have participated in the “Golden Ball”. Symbolic players of this Perugia in addition to Nakata were Andrea Mazzantini, Giovanni Tedesco and Milan Rapaic. On the bench two changes over the course of the season with Ilario Castagner being replaced by Vujadin Boskov, despite protests over his exoneration.

In 1999/00 arrives on the bench of Perugia Carlo Mazzone, the deputy is Leonardo Menichini. A quiet salvation is achieved well in advance. Players of the caliber of Bisoli, Calori and the return of Marco Materazzi arrive. Perugia in January sells Hidetoshi Nakata to Roma for an astronomical sum. At the end of a stormy Perugia-Bari ended 1-2, due to refereeing controversy Luciano Gaucci lashes out at Bari president Matarrese, all immortalized in a video that will remain in the history of Italian soccer. A movie already seen is repeated at the end of the season and under a universal downpour and a suspension of the match for over an hour, Juventus loses the championship on the last day defeated by the Grifoni 1-0 with a goal scored by Alessandro Calori.

In the 2000/01 season on the Perugia bench comes Serse Cosmi, who will remain biancorosso coach for 4 seasons. Best scorer of the season with 12 goals, an all-time record for a defender, the player Marco Materazzi. Despite skepticism about the new coach, who arrived from Serie C, Perugia saved easily and achieved important victories such as the one in Florence 4-3 with a hat trick by the Greek Zisis Vryzas and a 4-2 home win against Bari. Noteworthy this season was the signing of Korean Ahn Jung-Hwam, (Korean also the main sponsor of the biancorossi that season, the Daewoo car company).

In 2001/02 Perugia took an excellent eighth place with 46 points. The top scorer for the biancorosso is center forward Fabio Bazzani with 10 goals. The “biancorossi” are now an established reality in the top category. Among the stars of that team are the imaginative South American goalkeeper Oscar Cordoba, famous for his directorial raises, right-back Ze Maria, Iranian Rezaei, Marco Di Loreto, future world champion Fabio Grosso, captain Giovanni Tedesco, Fabio Liverani, Christian Obodo, Zisis Vryzas and Fabio Bazzani.

In 2002/03, Serse Cosmi’s Grifoni took ninth place and the chance to play in the Intertoto Cup. They also reached the semifinals of the Coppa Italia this season, eliminated at San Siro by AC Milan after a thrilling finale in which the red and white goalkeeper Kalac came close to scoring the qualifying goal in the final seconds (first leg 0-0 at “Curi,” return 2-1 for the Rossoneri at “San Siro”). For the first time in Perugia’s history, the red and white striker Fabrizio Miccoli won the title of top scorer in the Coppa Italia with 5 goals. Worth mentioning are the prestigious 1-0 home victories against AC Milan and Roma and the overwhelming 4-1 home win against Inter. Best scorer in the league Fabrizio Miccoli with 9 goals. This season Cosmi successfully deploys a 3-5-2 with Miccoli as second forward behind Vryzas, while Obodo replaces the departing Baiocco in midfield.

In 2003/04 the season began with the greatest international achievement in Perugia’s history, winning the Intertoto Cup in the final against Wolsfburg. The first leg final at the “Renato Curi” stadium ended with the result 1-0 for the Grifoni with Bothroyd’s goal. In the return match at the “Volkswagen-Arena” Perugia won 2-0 on German soil with goals by Giovanni Tedesco and Emanuele Berrettoni. This victory allows them to continue their journey in the Uefa Cup in which Perugia reaches the third round and is eliminated only by Arjen Robben’s Psv Eindhoven. Between Intertototo and Uefa Cup Perugia puts together a streak of 11 consecutive useful results with 8 wins and 3 draws. The brilliant European results contrast with the disappointing championship played by the Grifoni, who go all the way to the interdivisional play-off against Fiorentina to keep Serie A. A bitter conclusion came with relegation to Serie B (0-1 in the first leg at the “Renato Curi” and 1-1 in the return played at the “Artemio Franchi” stadium in Florence). In this season we are reminded of the arrival of Libyan Al Saadi Gaddafi, son of the better known Mu’ammar who was leader of the Libyan people in those days.

In 2004/05 despite the fact that Perugia, coached by Stefano Colantuono, reached third place resulting in a playoff final lost to Torino, the club was declared bankrupt due to financial collapse. This championship is also remembered for the record of 21 victories of which as many as 11 were obtained in away matches and for the three victories out of three matches played against Ternana (two victories in the championship resulting from the 0-2 win in Terni and 4-0 at home and by 2-0 at the “Renato Curi” in the Coppa Italia). Perugia’s top scorer turns out to be Ferreira Pinto with 8 goals.

     </details>

A PERIOD OF CHANGE

After the second corporate bankruptcy in 2010, Perugia is forced to restart from Serie D. Perugia, which occurred during the summer of 2005, the new Perugia calcio adhered to the Petrucci award, losing one category and finishing from Serie B to Serie C1. The presidency is taken over by Vincenzo Silvestrini, the coach is Vincenzo Patania, later replaced by Paolo Stringara. While remaining in the top positions for a long time, the Griffins finish in sixth place, missing the playoffs for promotion by one point.

The following season Corrado Benedetti arrived on the Grifo bench, later replaced by Marco Cari. As in the previous season, Perugia misses the playoff goal and finishes sixth. At the end of the season comes the resignation of president Vincenzo Silvestrini following the decision to play the Ternana-Perugia derby “behind closed doors.”

In 2007/2008 the presidency passed from Vincenzo Silvestrini to his brother Pierangelo and then to Enzo Di Marzo. At the end of the season, the Silvestrini family decides to leave the ownership of the club to the Perugian entrepreneur Leonardo Covarelli, fresh from a three-year stint at the helm of Pisa.

In the 2008/09 season begins with Perugia led by Paolo Indiani, who, however, sits only two matches in the Italian Cup, terminating his contract. Coach Giovanni Pagliari arrived on the Biancorossa bench, replaced on the fifth match by Maurizio Sarri. On the twenty-third day, Giovanni Pagliari returns to the bench, guiding the team to eighth place. Perugia in the season takes two important victories in derbies: at the “Liberati” wins 1-0 against Ternana with a goal by Cutolo and defeats Foligno at the “Curi” 3-0.

In 2009/10 Perugia, coached by Giovanni Pagliari and then by the Buzzi-Zaffaroni duo, finished the sports season in 11th place with two penalty points due to administrative irregularities. Serious financial problems emerge, to the point that the court in Perugia accepts the bankruptcy petition filed by some creditors. Five years after the first bankruptcy comes another one under Covarelli management. On July 12, 2010, the new “Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Perugia Calcio” is born and enters the Serie D championship.

In 2010/11 after the birth of the new company A.S.D. The championship is won by Perugia by a wide margin (twelve points ahead of second place Castel Rigone). In addition to winning the Serie D, Perugia wins the Coppa Italia of Serie D in the final against Turris in the neutral of Lanciano 1-0. The category scudetto, on the other hand, ends up in the hands of Cuneo, which defeats the red-and-whites in Treviso 1-0. After the difficulties of previous years, the Grifo relies on the energy and determination of the new Argentine ownership led by Javier Faroni, who immediately comes forward with the clear goal of bringing Perugia back to the levels it deserves.

The summer gathering on July 14, 2024 marks the beginning of this new cycle. There is an air of change: on the field, among the fans, and in the city. The project is built on solid foundations, with a motivated leadership, a young but ambitious roster, and a technical staff ready to enhance each and every talent.

The Serie C – Girone B championship looks balanced and competitive, but Perugia starts with the right spirit, determined to rebuild a winning mentality. The “Curi” returns to being a stronghold: in home matches the “biancorossi” show character, quality and great team spirit, winning important victories and offering convincing performances that ignite the enthusiasm of the public.

The season is full of significant moments: prominent among them are the derby wins, with solid performances that confirm the strength of the group and the compactness of the locker room. The excitement of the big matches blends with the pride of wearing the Grifo jersey, and every point won becomes a step toward the future.

There is no shortage of technical changes, a sign of a vigilant and attentive society: Formisano, Zauli and finally coach Vincenzo Cangelosi take turns at the helm of the team, giving continuity and identity to the group in the season finale.

Perugia ends the season with 47 points, the result of 11 wins, 14 draws and 13 defeats. A ranking that does not tell the whole story: it is in fact the path, the growth, the intensity with which they worked day after day that defines the true value of this year.

On offense, Daniele Montevago shines, author of 13 goals on the season and the team’s true offensive dragging force. Alongside him, many promising youngsters and experienced players shine, led by an increasingly reliable defense and a generous midfield.

On the organizational and management level, the new club demonstrates concreteness and focus, strengthening the club’s structure and laying the foundations for a solid future. Perugia also returns to prominence in terms of image, with initiatives that bring the public closer to the team and strengthen ties with the territory.

Thus, 2024/2025 closes as a season of positive transition, of restarting, of building. A year in which, brick by brick, the foundation was laid to dream big again. The path is mapped out: the Grifo has returned to flight, and it does so with new wings, strengthened by the unconditional love of its people.

     </details>

OUR HISTORY Birth The Santa Giuliana Great Football The Perugia of miracles The end of a cycle The Gaucci era A period of change Santopadre presidency THE CHAIRMAN Faroni From birth to the two world wars The history ofA.C.
